How to Prepare Your Storage for Kamloops' Hot Weather

July 27th 2021

In June Kamloops shattered historical high temperature records by reaching temps above 45C. Those of us at the los Rios Storage facility felt like we were melting, but with a little extra care we pulled through unscathed and want to make sure your stuff pulls through, too, the next time temperatures soar. As a storage facility that is not temperature-controlled, we thought you may like to know a few tips for preparing your belongings to withstand high temperatures in storage. Sometimes the temperature inside the unit can reach much higher than outside temperatures, but when properly packed and organized, many items can still be safely stored through a heatwave and beyond.

Make Space

Don’t overfill your storage container. It’s important to leave space between your belongings. This prevents accidental damage and allows air to flow. It also makes it easier to access anything you might need to pull out of storage.

Keep Storage Dry

While Kamloops is generally quite dry, a common concern with non-climate-controlled storage units is fluctuating humidity. Before filling your unit, make sure everything is completely dry. Then, by placing moisture absorbers throughout your unit, you will more effectively protect against moisture build-up. There are various types of inexpensive moisture absorbers readily available, such as silica gel, charcoal, and kitty litter.

Consider What You’re Storing & When

Some belongings fare much better in a non-climate-controlled facility than others. It’s a safe bet storing items such as tools, lawn equipment, metal furniture, and dishes. Things made of stainless steel, glass, and fabric hold up much better in high temperatures than items such as photographs, make-up, or leather items. That does not mean you can’t store certain items, but it does mean you need to think about how they are being packed, for how long, and if it is possible to find and remove them in the event of a long stretch of hot weather. Packing electronics in the original packing material is the safest way to pack them, but if that’s not possible, use a similar-sized box and then fill the remaining space with packing paper, peanuts, or bubble wrap.

What Not to Store

There are some things that are never a good idea to store no matter the type of unit. These items include hazardous liquids, combustible items, perishables, plants, or animals.

Self-storage offers a great way to keep belongings safe while you are decluttering or transitioning and with a bit of planning, you can be confident that your belongings will be in the same condition when you remove them as they were when they went in.
