November 15th 2022
If you are like most RV owners, you are probably getting ready to store them away for the winter months. At Los Rios Storage, located at 795 E Athabasca St in Kamloops BC, we know that there is more to winter storage than having a safe place to park. Properly winterizing your RV will ensure that it will be ready for all your summertime fun. Below are some of the things you will want to keep in mind when winterizing your RV.
Make Sure Your RV Is Clean
By giving your RV a thorough cleaning, it will help prevent any unwanted pests from using your RV as their wintertime home while in storage. Also, a good cleaning will prevent mildew and any other problems that can occur while in storage.
Cover
An RV cover is a good investment for protecting your RV from the elements especially as you’re winterizing it for storing outdoors. A good quality tarp or cover can protect your investments for the elements and help extend its lifespan. A high quality cover can be purchased at most RV dealerships. A proper tarp should be able to withstand the variety of weather conditions your vehicle will experience while in storage.
Disconnect the Battery and Propane Tank
When you are winterizing your RV or preparing for any storage for an extended period of time, it is a good idea to disconnect the battery and propane tank. Leaving the battery connected could result in a dead battery and leaving the propane tank connected could lead to a leak.
Protecting The Tires
When storing your RV outdoors, especially when winterizing it, an important step is to protect your tires. A rule of thumb is to place your RV on jack stands and partially deflate the tires. This will help prevent tires from flat-spotting and keep them from becoming deformed.
Place A Moisture Absorber In Your RV
To help prevent mildew and musty odors as you winterize your RV, place a moisture absorber inside. Moisture absorbers can be found in most hardware stores.
Winterize Your RV’s Plumbing System:
Having your RV’s plumbing system freeze and break while it is in storage can be a long and expensive repair. A necessary step before storing your RV for the winter is winterizing the plumbing system. This means at least emptying and flushing all tanks, but may include more steps for winterizing the system.
Check Your Insurance Policy
Do you know if your RV’s insurance policy includes storage? It is important to ask your insurance broker what type of coverage you have included in your policy.
